The concert offers a journey in time to Riga and Kurzeme of 17th and 18th century when famous celebrities such as The Old Stenders, Carl Heinrich Graun, Johann Adam Hiller, Johann Fischer and others were involved in the musical, literary and theatrical life of that time towns. Tthe concert the is given by Baroque orchestra COLLEGIUM MUSICUM RIGA (conductor Maris KUPCS), soloists – Ilze GREVELE (soprano), Monta MARTINSONE (soprano), Rinalds KANDALINCEVS (baritone), actor of Valmiera Drama Theatre Ivo MARTINSONS and baroque choir COLLEGIUM CHORO MUSICI RIGA.
Latvian baroque music is a phenomenon not widely known or spoken about in the Latvian society as the findings of the recent years in the field, especially in the context of the ancient music fundamentally change the history of Latvia of 17th and 18th century. At the moment undoubted is the fact that The Age of Enlightenment like in other European countries was present here as well. Owing to Baroque orchestra’s Collegium Musicum Riga participation in festivals in Lithuania and France the foreign audience has welcomed our treasure – Latvian Baroque, noticing it’s qualitative, European-like and simultaneously having the peculiar feeling of the Baltic region composition and performance. Unfortunately little information is available on the subject and extremely interesting investigations in music. Therefore it is essential to study the historical way of Latvia and introduce every citizen of Latvia to the composers of that time and their contribution.
