15 September, 18.30, Daugavpils Theatre, Maris Briezkalns’ quintet with Latvian composers’ musical themes in the concert "Rothko in Jazz".

Art and music together –the Latvian music audiovisual project “Rothko in Jazz”, reflecting the mood of the works of the abstract expressionist’s Mark Rothko. The first performance was last year 29 April at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, USA.

“Rothko in Jazz” is an audiovisual project, consisting of ten new jazz compositions created for certain art pieces of Mark Rothko. Melodies are created by Latvian composers Lolita Ritmanis, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Arturs Maskats, Rihards Dubra, Pēteris Vasks, Jēkabs Jančevskis, Vilnis Šmīdbergs, Jēkabs Nīmanis, Georgs Pelēcis un Raimonds Pauls. Arrangements are created by musicians of Maris Briezkalns’ quintet (MBQ) - Māris Briežkalns (drums), Viktors Ritovs (keys), Gints Pabērzs (saksophones), Edvīns Ozols (doublebass) un Raimonds Macats (electric cello, harmonica).

Mark Rothko has named his works as “the soul status portrayals” and the same mood have been created by the musicians. Kristopher Rothko the son of Mark Rothko has encouraged the project, kindly allowing using the works. The concert is a great chance to enjoy an audiovisual experience – during the performance the works of Mark Rothko will be projected on the stage. The majority of the works were created from 1945 till 1969, and were not available for the Latvian audience in such a format.

The concert is organised by Daugavpils Latvian Culture centre in cooperation with “Latvijas koncerti”, supported by Daugavpils municipality and Daugavpils Theatre.
